Abstract

The incorporation of a special regulation into part-time contracts of employment constitutes one of the main innovations in the latest labor reform. This is accounted for by (a) the evident, practical advantages of these contracts: they make for both, ways of flexible distribution of the workday and the workers’ greater autonomy for having their working time at their disposal; and (b) the relevance given to these contracts in antiunemployment social policies which make possible a distribution of the time available and the incorporation into the labor market of people who cannot, or do not want to, have a full-time job. For these reasons, this article attempts to analyze part-time jobs from the perspective of the Chilean Labor Law, with the certainty that it is necessary to know in depth this mode of contract in Chile. The article also addresses both the need for a reconsideration of the traditional ways to organize subordinate jobs judicially and, in turn, the purpose of making possible a greater diffusion of part-time jobs, turning them, in this way, into reviving and productive instruments of Chile’s current labor market.
